At Greenhill Primary School, the safety, welfare and wellbeing of every child is our highest priority.
Safeguarding is everyone's responsibility. We are committed to creating an open, positive and vigilant safeguarding culture in which children feel safe, are listened to and know that trusted adults will act when they need help.
Our safeguarding practice is underpinned by the statutory guidance Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE) 2026, which makes clear that safeguarding is everyone's responsibility and that schools should maintain an attitude of “it could happen here.” This is reflected in our commitment to an open, positive and vigilant safeguarding culture that puts pupils' interests first, with safeguarding embedded across every aspect of school life and leaders and governors maintaining effective oversight of our whole-school approach.
Safeguarding is Woven Through Everything We Do
At Greenhill, safeguarding is not viewed as a standalone policy or procedure. It is woven through every aspect of school life.
This includes our curriculum, relationships and behaviour, attendance, SEND and inclusion, online safety, recruitment and induction, staff training, site security, educational visits, pastoral support and the day-to-day decisions made by adults across school.
We take this whole-school approach because effective safeguarding depends upon creating a culture where:
- children know how to keep themselves and others safe;
- children know which trusted adults they can speak to when they are worried;
- children's voices are heard and taken seriously;
- staff understand that safeguarding concerns can arise anywhere and remain professionally curious and vigilant;
- adults recognise changes in children's behaviour, presentation, attendance or wellbeing which may indicate that they need help;
- children who may be particularly vulnerable are identified and supported;
- concerns are recorded, shared and acted upon promptly;
- online safety is treated as an integral part of safeguarding;
- staff understand that safeguarding concerns can occur both inside and outside the home and online;
- appropriate information is shared with safeguarding partners when necessary to protect a child; and
- our policies, systems and procedures are regularly reviewed so that we continually strengthen our practice.

The DSL and DDSL provide leadership and oversight of safeguarding across school and ensure that concerns are responded to appropriately and in a timely manner.

You do not need to be certain that abuse, neglect or harm has occurred before raising a concern. If something does not feel right, it is important that the information is shared.
Staff Safeguarding Training
All staff at Greenhill receive regular safeguarding and child protection training and updates.
All staff read and understand the relevant requirements of Keeping Children Safe in Education and receive safeguarding training as part of their induction, with regular updates and refresher training throughout their time at Greenhill.
Our safeguarding training programme for all staff includes:
- Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE) – child protection and recognising signs of abuse, neglect and exploitation
- Prevent Duty and recognising risks associated with radicalisation and extremism
- Female Genital Mutilation (FGM)
- ACT – Action Counters Terrorism awareness
- Online safety
- Cyber security training
Safeguarding training is not treated as a one-off annual event. Staff receive regular updates, reminders and opportunities to revisit key safeguarding themes so that safeguarding remains at the forefront of everyone's practice.
Our aim is that every adult in school understands what to look for, what to do, who to speak to and the importance of acting without delay if they have a concern about a child.
Bury Multi-Agency Safeguarding Hub (MASH)
The Multi-Agency Safeguarding Hub (MASH) is Bury's single point of access for concerns about children who may need additional help, support or protection.
MASH brings together Children's Social Care and partner agencies so that information can be shared appropriately, concerns assessed and decisions made about the support or safeguarding action a child may require.

Local Authority Designated Officer (LADO)
The Local Authority Designated Officer (LADO) oversees concerns and allegations relating to adults who work or volunteer with children.
This includes circumstances where an adult working with children may have:
- behaved in a way that has harmed, or may have harmed, a child;
- possibly committed a criminal offence against or related to a child;
- behaved towards a child or children in a way that indicates they may pose a risk of harm; or
- behaved in a way which raises concerns about their suitability to work with children.

Concerns about the conduct of a member of staff, volunteer or other adult working with children should be reported and managed in accordance with the school's safeguarding, allegations and whistleblowing procedures.

Supporting Children with Medical Conditions
At Greenhill Primary School, we are committed to ensuring that children with medical conditions are fully included in all aspects of school life and are supported to be safe, healthy and able to thrive.
We recognise that some children may require additional support to manage a medical condition during the school day. We work closely with parents and carers, children and relevant health professionals to ensure that individual needs are understood and appropriate arrangements are in place.
All staff are trained in First Aid, and all staff working within our Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) are trained in Paediatric First Aid training.
Staff also receive appropriate training to ensure that they have the knowledge and confidence to support a range of medical needs safely. Our training includes:
- Administration of Medication
- Allergy and Anaphylaxis Training for Schools
- Asthma Awareness for Schools
- First Aid
- Paediatric First Aid for EYFS staff
Children's medical conditions and individual needs are reviewed regularly, and where a child has an individual healthcare plan, this is formally reviewed each term, or sooner where a child's needs or circumstances change. We work in partnership with parents, carers and healthcare professionals to ensure that the information we hold is accurate and that appropriate support remains in place.
Where medication is required during the school day, prescribed medication can be administered on the school site following prior written consent from a parent or carer, ensuring that children receive the care they need within the school day
We aim to ensure that a medical condition does not unnecessarily prevent a child from accessing learning, enrichment opportunities, educational visits or the wider life of the school. Appropriate reasonable adjustments, risk assessments and individual arrangements are put in place where required so that children with medical needs can participate fully, feel confident and thrive at Greenhill.

Our safeguarding policies and procedures are reviewed regularly and updated in response to changes in statutory guidance, local safeguarding arrangements, emerging risks and learning from safeguarding practice.
They form part of our wider commitment to ensuring that safeguarding at Greenhill is not simply something we comply with, but something that is understood, embedded and lived throughout our school community.
