Phonics & Reading
Phonics and reading are taught through Read Write Inc in Reception and KS1. This is then applied across the curriculum through reading, writing and spelling. As phonic knowledge develops and children complete the RWI program, they are taught through Whole Class Reading sessions to develop inference and understanding. In KS2, and in Year 2 once children complete Grey level RWI, we use Pathways to Read. This uses high quality, age appropriate real books that children find engaging and exciting. The lessons practice the content domain skills of Prediction, Clarification of unfamiliar vocabulary, retrieval of information and inference.
In KS1 children take home a RWI phonically matched reading book as well as a library book for pleasure. In KS2 children take home a book for pleasure that is a “real “book rather than one from a reading scheme and then access e-books matched to their reading ability level through Reading Plus.
Reading Plus is used as a tool to develop children’s fluency, comprehension and vocabulary both in school and at home to consolidate and extend their learning. Our class library books are carefully chosen to present challenge whilst expanding children’s understanding of the wider curriculum and to ensure the children are exposed to all genres and a range of authors.
